Cultural Responsiveness
& Hip-Hop
Based Education
The modern American educational system has failed to deliver on its core promise. It continues to ignore content produced by and for cultures outside of the so-called “mainstream” American culture. By doing so, it alienates already marginalized communities and further penalizes them for lack of total assimilation. This project aims to create a space for educators to have a conversation about cultural responsiveness in learning spaces by adopting Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE) practices. HHBE offers a unique opportunity to create a space where lived experiences and prior knowledge become assets. Cultural realities can be communicated, understood, discussed, and analyzed in impactful ways that encourage growth while providing an opportunity to master skills associated with critical thinking, critical writing, and critical reading.
